How To Monetise Your Blog On a Budget

Even if you’re a new blogger, it’s never too soon to start monetising your blog!

While some digital nomads work a “normal” job remotely on the road, I’m particularly interested in a passive income; one where I can set something up on automation, that brings in the money and leaves me time to enjoy my travels!

Creating a passive income on automation is great for people that are still working the 9-5 or working part-time, because you can build up your travel business on the side until it earns enough for you to quit your job and hit the road.

But first you need a monetisation strategy that won’t break the bank!

The difficulty comes when you don’t even know where to start, or have a rough idea but don’t know how to put it all together.

I’ve done dozens of courses and read volumes of articles but none of them had a specific strategy for new bloggers, especially those on a budget.

I wanted to find a way to help fellow travel bloggers who are just starting out with a simple and cost effective way to monetise their blogs, which is how this course came about.

Unfortunately the “build-it-and-they-will-come” strategy no longer works for gaining a loyal following for your travel blog because there are literally thousands of travel blogs out there now, all doing the same thing.

Find Your Point of Difference

The first hurdle new bloggers come across is how to stand out in the now huge travel blogging industry. You need to have a point of difference, a reason for your readers to want to engage with your blog – and this became the first part of the equation in my monetisation strategy.

Gain a Loyal Following

Once you have a point of difference, getting eyes on your blog should be every bloggers first priority. This is why I started a Facebook group Eyes On Wanderlusters, a group of fellow bloggers just starting out and helping each other gain a greater audience by sharing on social media. In the SEO game, social media also provides reputable backlinks that Google just loves! 

Social media is great for driving traffic to your blog, but from there we want to gain a loyal following – which is the second part of the equation in my monetisation strategy.


And the third part of the monetisation strategy is building a relationship with your loyal following, building trust by letting them get to know you to the point that they are accepting recommendations to buy stuff from a “friend”.

All of this is on automation, with the ability to start simply and eventually scale up your business and revenue.

What Do You Need to Get Started?

  • All you need is a blog on any platform that will accept Mailchimp integration, the Standard Plan with Mailchimp at $15pm – this is the cheapest plan that offers automation. (By the way, I have no affiliation with Mailchimp, it just turns out to be the most budget conscious of all the options currently on the market).
  • You’ll also need affiliate products (or your own) to recommend to your readers. 
  • If you haven’t heard of affiliate products before, that’s cool because I’ve included easy affiliate programs in the course too and I keep it super simple!
